미국 당송대 지성사 연구의 권위자로, 그의 연구는 주로 7세기 이래 중국에서 일어난 지성적•사회적 변화와 문화적 변화에 초점을 맞춘다. 현재 하버드 대학 동아시아언어문명과 교수로 재직 중이며 『Sung Dynasty Uses of the I Ching』(1990),『Ordering the World: Approaches to State and Society in Sung Dynasty China』(1992),『Culture and the State in Chinese History』(1998),『Energizing China: Reconciling Protection And Economic Growth』(1998),『Ways with Words』(2000) 등의 공저자이다. 최근에는 북송 시대 휘종(徽宗)에 관한 연구서인『Emperor Huizong and Late Northern Song China: The Politics of Culture and the Culture of Politics』(2006)를 공저했고 『Neo-Confucianism in History』(2008)라는 연구서를 썼다.학문적인 연구 외에도 동아시아 디지털 컨소시엄을 만들어서 동아시아와 서양 연구자들 사이의 디지털 정보 교환의 장을 발전시켰고, 하버드 대학과 푸단(復旦) 대학의 협조를 받아 ‘중국의 역사 지리 정보 체계(The China Historical Geographic Information Systems)’를 기획하고 감독했다. 또한 2004년 고려대학교 민족문화연구원이 주관한 ‘조선시대 전자문화지도 개발과 문화 연구’에 참여하기도 했다.
